The nice thing about another year rolling around is that it’s a blank slate and represents an entirely new beginning. Want to start off 2017 with a bang and impress your boss? You can! See the five ways below.
1. Be authentic
There’s not much worse than the keen-bean newbie who bounces around, bleeding desperation, his eyes screaming, “I’m trying to impress you. How can I impress you more?”. So don’t be that guy. Instead, be authentic, be yourself, and impress with your quiet confidence and authenticity – you are impressive, you don’t need to try to impress your boss.
2. Be professional
You know – the obvious. Please don’t be the girl who doesn’t know what appropriate clothing for work is (I know you may not have a dress code – slipslops, strapless, visible underwear, cleavage, shorts, and minis are still not ok) or the guy who leaves ten minutes early every day. Arrive early or on time, remember you’re not paid to make tea and coffee and stand and gossip, don’t get drunk at work or work functions, ensure all your office and email communication is appropriate and just behave like a normal, professional human being. You’ll be amazed as to how many people don’t act professionally, so being super professional about things that are really just common sense sets you ahead of at least 30% of the pack. This is an easy win!
3. Make her look good
Your job is not to steal the limelight or take credit. Your job is essentially to make your boss’s work-life easier. So if you do well, she looks good, she worries less about your portfolio and gives you more responsibility and you prove that you’re able to do more and more and hopefully line yourself up for a promotion. Never go around your boss’s back, don’t sell her down the river if she makes a mistake and confront her honestly and in an appropriate way about any issues you may have rather than gossiping or complaining about them to all and sundry. You don’t have to like your boss, but it’s a bonus if you do. The better you do your work and the more you take on from your boss, the more you’ll impress your boss and also the entire company.
4. Be kind
Nasty people always come off worse in the workplace. They may score a few small wins, cut a few corners or get satisfaction from making others feel bad, but in the end, kindness wins. Don’t be a pushover, but if you’re kind to everyone you meet you’ll make friends, impress others, sleep better at night, create positive energy around you, foster goodwill and get a good reputation in the work place.
5. Cop to your mistakes and apologize for them
Let’s not pretend we’re not going to make mistakes or mess something up. We are. We all do. What’s more important, however, is how you deal with your mistakes or any negative (or “constructive” feedback). Take ownership and say “I’m sorry. I’ll put systems in place to prevent it from happening again.” Don’t blame other people – ever. Don’t over apologize. Impress your boss by taking full responsibility for a situation and fixing it. That’s all you can do!
